That version bypasses Saruman's death completely, having Treebeard casually toss off a line that the traitor's power is "no more." Considering that Saruman is the functional villain of the first two Lord of the Rings films, this feels dismissive, to say the least. Yet, it's not as though the theatrical cut handles this better. It's an important scene that ends with the villainous wizard's death, but the editing is clumsy, and the pacing feels off. Gandalf actually repeats a line twice - "You were deep in the enemy's counsel" - and it's jarring. One egregious example is at the beginning of The Return of the King, when Gandalf, Theoden and other warriors fresh off a victory at Helm's Deep confront a defeated Saruman at Isengard. Some scenes feel rather padded as well, with little to justify their length.
